In
this process, a catalyzed resin mix is poured over flat fiberglass sheet
or pre-formed fiberglass, and press-actuated pressure moves
the resin mix throughout the reinforcement. The molding dies
are typically unheated matched epoxy dies, hence some people
refer to this process as "Cold Molding". However,
heated epoxy, nickel faced and metal dies have been used to
improve cycle time and surface quality. Cycle times range
from 5 minutes to 15 minutes depending on part size and thickness.
The resulting part has two smooth surfaces and will exhibit
accurate dimensional control. Adding color pigment to resin
mix allows for molded in color. This process is applicable
for under hood applications for regular production of medium
to high volume (2,500 - 8,000/year) products. Parts made using
this process can be suitable for use as exterior panels, with
surfacing and two (2) applications of prime paint.
